Virtual War Zone

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

The Pirate Bay (http://thepiratebay.org) was shut down today by the Swedish police. It’s reminiscent of a while back when Suprnova got shut down, except this is gonna be a different kind of battle I think. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out differently from Suprnova, given that Sweden has no laws pertaining to copyright infringement like we do here in the US.

They picked up three TPB operators who are like 22, 24, and 28. I was thinking about how easy it’d be to get yourself lots of intarweb fame, get arrested, and Slashdotted like a mofo by just starting a good BT site in the US. Once you got a decent amount of traffic, you’d probably last like 20 minutes and the FBI would show up and take your boxes and haul you off.

I think it’d be ridiculously scary to operate a site of that magnitude with the kind of stigma that exists associated with BitTorrent, especially on today’s internets. And all this on top of fighting the Net Neutrality debate and the Two-Tier Internet. It’s like fighting a war with people who don’t want to change or want to control everything directly because it’s scary for them. So as a result anything that pushes the envelope gets attacked, raided, or both. That’s just dumb. When are people going to learn that this won’t go away?

“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!”

Recollection

Friday, May 19th, 2006

My cousin’s message today said “yearbook day” and that reminded me of our high school yearbook days. Thinking back on it now, the whole idea of having a billion people sign your yearbook seems rather laughable.

You’d have people sign it, and they’d say things like, “It was great sitting next to you in math class. We should hang out over the summer, call me sometime. 465-5555.” This person is someone who you’ve probably talked to twice you’re entire life, and one of those two times was to say excuse me when they were blocking the door and wouldn’t move out of the freakin’ way. And the other was when they dropped their pen and you said, “dude, you dropped your pen.”

Or, you’d get the really witty guy who would sign it, “Cows moo, ducks quack, I was the first to sign your crack.” Thanks…that’s really clever.

Or maybe, “Good luck in college.” I remember getting a lot of those my senior year.

Or there were always the ones that really stand out, like when a creepy guy said he was going to staple a flaming cow to me and Kip’s dorm room door in Kip’s yearbook. At least it was unique.

Basically, I was just thinking of how ridiculous it all was and how everyone was so fake, especially on yearbook day. It’s all ok, though, when you get to this point and look back on it and realize that your high school experiences affect very little in the future. However, it’s all worth it when you can derive a small amount of satisfaction from having the person who used to pick on you in high school make your barbecue or something for you. “So…you’re scooping barbecue now, huh? …congratulations…you’ve really come a long way from throwing M+M’s at people.”

The first time I’ve ever been speechless, I think…

So I guarantee you that this will most likely be one of the most messed up things you’ll probably ever read. It’ll sort of piss you off, but leave you baffled at the same time.

I have to wonder, “wtf?” It’s probably one of the first times I can think of where I’ve not been speechless. I usually have something to say about everything, but this is just…well, you’ll see. I don’t know that there are words to do it justice.

Read this and you’ll be all, “what…the…hell…”

Sony & Their Outlandish Pricing Scheme

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

There’s been a lot of talk about the PS3 and how it’s not historically the highest priced system if you adjust for inflation. If you look at the price adjusted charts, the Intellivision, NeoGeo, 3DO, CD-i, and Saturn are the highest with the PS3 right in line with those. While it’s true that it’s not priced as high as those other systems, people seem to be ignoring the obvious fact that those systems did horribly. No one cared about the CD-i or the Sega Saturn. That would seem to indicate that the price really is a major factor in the sales performance of the system.

There’s also talk about how a lot of 3rd party developers don’t have the dev kits yet, so there will be very few titles at launch. And of those titles that are launched, the majority won’t utilize the full power of the Cell processor.

I think Sony might be setting themselves up to lose in not only the next gen console race but also in the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD race.

I suppose we’ll see how it plays out. But I’m still gonna predict a big Nintendo win.

Here’s hopin’ anyway!

World’s Funniest Spam

Friday, May 12th, 2006

I got this today, and I think it’s probably the best spam I’ve ever gotten:

Good day to you Sir!

I am ready to kill myself and eat my dog, if medicine prices here (http://gsvowq.pikegait.info/?35049711) are bad.

Look, the site and call me 1-800 if its wrong..

My dog and I are still alive :)

If that’s not the funniest thing ever, you should kill yourself and eat your dog.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl!!!!!!

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Two words. Z…OMG!

Pit, Metaknight, Wario, Zero suit Samus, Snake. Could it be any cooler? No, probably not!!

Check out the trailer here

This game looks AWESOME. It appears from the trailers that there are some kind of super moves that each character can do too. They show Mario devastating everything on the screen, Link kicking the crap out of Mario in some kind of Tri-Force move thing, and Samus creating some huge explosion with her arm cannon.

I, for one, hope they’ve kept Shiek and Ness as they are my two favorite characters.

On a larger scale, it’s looking really really good for Nintendo this round. Sony looks to be possibly shooting themselves in the face with a 600 dollar price tag. Yes, it looks amazing, but it just seems like it’s unnecessarily overpowered and, because of that, overpriced.

It really does look like Nintendo is going to be the one to beat. I can’t wait to play.

Hurray Nintendo!
